India’s hot, humid coasts make long-sleeved shirts and pants uncomfortable for work and daily life. Shorts and short-sleeved shirts can boost comfort, save electricity by reducing AC use, ease monsoon travel, and lift productivity. The challenge? The taboo of looking “vella वेल्ला”.
Inspired by Japan’s "Cool Biz" campaign, here’s how we can make the change.
Japan’s "Cool Biz" Model
In 2005, Japan’s PM Junichirō Koizumi launched "Cool Biz," promoting short-sleeved shirts without ties, with AC at 28°C. His tie-free, without jacket and short sleave appearances made it mainstream, saving energy. Indian companies like TCS, Infosys or startups could do the same, with leaders wearing smart shorts to break the taboo.
Why Shorts Work
Comfort: Less heat stress, more focus.
Energy Savings: Higher AC settings cut costs and emissions.
Rain-Friendly: Short attire does not get dirty easily.
Productivity: Comfortable workers perform better.
The hurdle is cultural—shorts feel “silly” in formal settings. Bold action can shift this.
Taking initiative at individual level
The End
